The rapid, forceful contractions of the abdominal muscles during exhalation in Kapalabhati significantly increase intra-abdominal pressure, which in turn elevates intrathoracic pressure. This creates a pumping action that can enhance venous return to the heart and improve circulation. The active exhalations and passive inhalations lead to a higher respiratory rate and increased minute ventilation, potentially causing a transient reduction in arterial carbon dioxide (CO2) levels (respiratory alkalosis). This CO2 washout can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to an energizing effect, increased alertness, and a feeling of warmth. Regular practice may also strengthen the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, improving respiratory muscle endurance and efficiency.

It is also not recommended during menstruation or for those experiencing acute anxiety or panic attacks due to its stimulating nature.
