Rebirthing Breathwork

A conscious connected breathing technique that eliminates pauses between inhalations and exhalations to induce a state of continuous respiratory flow. This continuous cycle promotes deep emotional release and helps process subconscious psychological blockages.

Step-by-Step Guide
  1. 1Lie down flat on your back in a comfortable, safe environment where you will not be disturbed.
  2. 2Begin breathing in a continuous, circular pattern through the mouth, ensuring there is absolutely no pause between the inhale and the exhale.
  3. 3Draw the inhale actively and deeply into the upper chest, then allow the exhale to fall out naturally and completely relaxed without forcing or pushing the air out.
  4. 4Maintain this connected rhythm, allowing any physical sensations, tingling, or emotions to surface without resistance or judgment.
  5. 5If you experience intense cramping (tetany) in your hands or face, or overwhelming emotions, gently slow the breath down or return to normal nasal breathing to regulate your nervous system.
  6. 6Conclude the session by stopping the active breathing and resting in normal, relaxed breathing for 10 to 15 minutes to integrate the experience.
Physiological Mechanisms

Rebirthing breathwork utilizes conscious connected breathing to induce a controlled state of respiratory alkalosis. By eliminating the natural pauses between breaths, the continuous ventilation decreases arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO2) levels, leading to the Bohr effect where oxygen binds more tightly to hemoglobin, temporarily reducing oxygen delivery to tissues including the brain. This cerebral vasoconstriction and altered cortical perfusion temporarily suppress the default mode network (DMN) and frontal lobe dominance, facilitating the surfacing of subconscious emotional material. Additionally, the alkalotic state increases calcium binding to albumin, reducing ionized calcium in the blood, which often causes transient physical sensations such as carpopedal spasm (tetany) and tingling.
